"Professor Theoharides is the best! Super knowledgeable and has high, but reasonable expectations. The class is very intense; be prepared to put in a lot of work."

"Professor Theoharides is a 10/10 professor and solidified my decision to major in econ. I won't lie and say the class wasn't hard, but she is just such an enthusiastic professor and made me want to keep trying and coming to class. I cannot wait to take a class with her again. "

Teaching: Lecture, Full class discussion, Lab
Reading (pages/week): 20+ pages (journal articles, so they're 2 columns, small fonts, single spaced, but nothing too difficult)
Homework (hours/week): 12
Essays: A final paper, but there are multiple "checkpoints" (i.e., project proposal, methods, results, conclusions) spread out throughout the semester.

"ECON 421 is one of my favorite courses at Amherst. The class was full of students who were genuinely passionate about the material and I even came away with meaningful friendships from it. The readings were very cohesively chosen, with each one building on, challenging, or refining the ones before it, which made the course really thoughtful and well structured. We also got to present a journal paper and write our own (ECON360 - Econometrics is a prerequisite, and you use a lot of methods in the class), which made the class engaging and intellectually rewarding. Most of all, the professor’s enthusiasm for the subject was contagious, and the course honestly gave me a bit of a “eureka” moment... it raised the bar for the kinds of classes I want to pursue and clarified the kind of work I hope to do in the future."
